What and Why
Toponymy
Goostrey first appears in recorded history in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it is spelt Gostrel. The name possibly means 'Godhere's tree' with Godhere being a landowner/lord during the period.
The name Jodrell is derived from William Jaudrell, an archer who fought under Edward of Woodstock (né Edward Plantaganet) during the 14th-century Hundred Years' War. As a result he was rewarded with lands in Cheshire.
